Impartial guides to online privacy

This is a big topic and can often be confusing. If you’d like tips on controlling whether and how you’re being digitally tracked, securing your information from hacking and weak passwords, and the trade-offs between different tools and corporate or government surveillance, we recommend checking out Surveillance Self-Defense from the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Should you be a resident of the European Union or an EU citizen living in the United States, you have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation, including the right to know what is being collected about you and to have that information about you be deleted. Please contact us at any time if you have questions about this.

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Your privacy is important to Waverly, and we do not collect any more information about you than is necessary to help us serve you. Any information that we do collect or that you provide is kept in the strictest confidence and not shared with or sold to others without your explicit consent.

Waverly will never sell, lease, share or otherwise disclose your personally identifiable information to any other organization without your explicit written consent, unless compelled by United States or international court or executive order. If we are required by law to disclose any information you have submitted, we will attempt to provide you with notice, unless we are prohibited, in order to give you an opportunity to legally challenge such disclosure.

Analytics (data tracking)

Our website software does not collect personally-identifiable information. It does, however, record your computer’s Internet Protocol (IP) address. This IP address could be used to identify your computer’s geographic location but is not linked to any other information about you. As noted below, embedded content from other providers may include additional tracking.

Our website is hosted by DreamHost, located in California, USA. DreamHost’s servers will note website visitors and their (reported) location as well as duration of visit and pages visited. While we cannot control DreamHost’s privacy and data retention policies, our experience has been that they do not share these server logs with any third parties. In 2017, they fought an attempt by the U.S. government to retrieve access logs from another customer’s website.

Contacting us

If you use our contact form to get in touch with us or email us, we may retain the information you send to us indefinitely in our email system. Our email is operated by Google, and while we will keep any information you send us private and confidential, we don’t have complete control over what data-scraping algorithms Google performs on your message (or any of our other messages).

If you have something you want kept in the strictest of confidence, please ask to speak with Rev. Sara in person.

Embedded content from social media and other websites

Posts on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.) from our Facebook page, other social media, or other websites. Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if you visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, aggregate data about you to compile an advertising profile, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website. Details about some of these embedded sources are provided below.

If you are concerned about limiting what data these websites can collect on you, we suggest browser privacy options like uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger.

Our website embeds content from Facebook, 1601 Willow Road, Menlo Park, CA 94025, USA. On each page, a connection to the Facebook servers is established. The Facebook server is informed about which of our pages you have visited.

If you’re logged in to your Facebook account, Facebook associates your browsing behavior directly with your personal profile. Facebook also compiles data profiles on visitors who are not logged in to Facebook.

Further information about handling user data can be found in the data protection declaration of Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/about/privacy.

Our website uses plugins from YouTube, which is operated by Google. The operator of the pages is YouTube LLC, 901 Cherry Ave., San Bruno, CA 94066, USA. If you visit one of our pages featuring a YouTube plugin, a connection to the YouTube servers is established. The YouTube server is informed about which of our pages you have visited.

If you’re logged in to your YouTube account, YouTube allows you to associate your browsing behavior directly with your personal profile. You can prevent this by logging out of your YouTube account.

Further information about handling user data can be found in the data protection declaration of YouTube under  https://www.google.com/policies/privacy/.

Our website includes a signup form from our email list provider, Mailchimp, operated by The Rocket Science Group LLC, located in Georgia, USA. The signup form itself is hosted on our site, so no information is passed to Mailchimp unless you fill out the form.

When you sign up for a Waverly email list, your contact information is passed to and stored by Mailchimp. If you sign up for our newsletter, you may unsubscribe at any time, and this will remove your information from our Mailchimp subscriber database. To unsubscribe, follow the link at the bottom of every email newsletter, or contact us.

For information on Mailchimp’s handling of privacy for contacts on email lists, please visit https://mailchimp.com/legal/privacy/#3._Privacy_for_Contacts.

When you unsubscribe from an email list, a direct connection between your browser and the Mailchimp server is established.

For information on Mailchimp’s handling of data collected when viewing unsubscribe forms, please visit https://mailchimp.com/legal/privacy/#4._Privacy_for_Visitors.

On some of our pages, plugins of the SoundCloud social network (SoundCloud Limited, Berners House, 47-48 Berners Street, London W1T 3NF, UK) may be integrated.

When you visit our site, a direct connection between your browser and the SoundCloud server is established via the plugin. This enables SoundCloud to receive information that you have visited our site from your IP address. If you click on the “Like” or “Share” buttons while you are logged into your SoundCloud account, you can link the content of our pages to your SoundCloud profile. This means that SoundCloud can associate visits to our pages with your user account. For more information on SoundCloud’s privacy policy, please go to https://soundcloud.com/pages/privacy.

If you do not want SoundCloud to associate your visit to our site with your SoundCloud account, log out of your SoundCloud account.

Google Web Fonts

For uniform representation of fonts, this page uses web fonts provided by Google. When you open a page, your browser loads the required web fonts into your browser cache to display texts and fonts correctly.

For this purpose your browser has to establish a direct connection to Google servers. Google thus becomes aware that our web page was accessed via your IP address. If your browser does not support web fonts, a standard font is used by your computer.

Further information about handling user data can be found at https://developers.google.com/fonts/faq and in Google’s privacy policy at https://www.google.com/policies/privacy/.

Donors and donations

We will not sell, share or trade our donors’ names or personal information with any other entity, nor send mailings to our donors on behalf of other organizations.

Any contributions made to Waverly in person, whether by cash, check or credit card, are recorded in our physical office’s records. These records are not shared with or connected to the website in any way, and should a breach of the website occur no information about donors would be accessible.

When you make a donation to Waverly online, the data collection, processing and data storage is handled by PayPal. We do not record or retain any of this information on the Waverly website itself. PayPal provides mechanisms for us to retrieve this information through their secure platform, and we may export this data to our physical office’s financial records as well. Again, none of these records are in any way connected to the website.

Who we share your data with

We do not and will not sell, rent, lend, or give any information about you collected on or through this website to third parties without your express consent.

As noted above, our email lists are operated by Mailchimp, and in order to send messages to the list we must share any contact information you provided when you signed up. You may unsubscribe at any time by contacting us or following the link at the bottom of every email newsletter.

How long we retain your data

We do not collect analytics information on our visitors, but any messages sent to us through the website may exist in our email systems indefinitely. If you have something you want kept in the strictest of confidence, please ask to speak with Rev. Sara in person.

What rights you have over your data

At any time, you can request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are legally obliged to keep, such as financial donation records.

Please contact us if you have any concerns over any data we may hold about you.
